Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: WHAT CAN YOU POWDERCOAT?
Pretty much anything that can withstand the baking process. If it can be heated to 400 plus degrees, it can be powder coated! This is mostly limited to metal items. Items must be disassembled and any parts that cannot be heated, will have to be removed before powder coating.
Q: CAN YOU POWDER COAT MY RIMS WITHOUT TAKING THE TIRES OFF?
No. You will need to have the tires removed before bringing the rims in. You will also have to remove the filler stems. The rim or any other part must be able to be baked in our oven at about 400 degrees in its entirety.
Q: WHY POWDER COAT VS. LIQUID PAINT?
Liquid painting uses chemicals that have the potential of being hazardous to people and the environment. Liquid paint takes hours to dry and days, even weeks, to fully cure. Powder coatings contain no solvents and emits very little, if any polluting VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the atmosphere. Powder coating also cures within minutes or hours. Additionally, powder coating is more durable and will last longer than traditional liquid paint.
Q: WHAT ABOUT HOLES AND THREADS?
Unless otherwise specified, we will automatically tape, plug, and cap threads. If you have sensitive areas that need to be covered, we will tape them off with a high temp tape. If your part requires specific taping or plugging requirements, contact us for more information.
Q: WILL POWDERCOATING SCRATCH?
Yes, just like any other coating if you apply enough pressure to it. However, powder coat is VERY durable and able to take more abuse than typical liquid paint. You will definitely get a longer life out of a powder coat than standard paint.
Q: DO YOU HAVE TO PREP YOUR PARTS BEFORE BRINGING THEM IN?
Having a clean part definitely helps with the pricing, but we offer media blasting and will make sure the part is clean before we begin the coating process. It is essential that the metal surface be prepared properly prior to powder coating. Free of any oil, grease and residue, mill scale, rubber, plastic, or wood.
Q: IS POWDER COATING EXPENSIVE?
You might be surprised at just how reasonable the cost of powder coating can be. Common items can be powder coated for far less than what a traditional painter would charge. Plus you get the benefit of a durable, baked on finish that will withstand scratching and pealing far better than traditional paint. Call CMC today for an estimate.
Q: CAN I SHIP MY PARTS TO YOU? WILL YOU SHIP THEM BACK?
Yes, we will ship your parts back to you! Whether you have a race team that’s always on the road, or just too busy to stop by, we can tackle your projects and get them to you wherever you might be. Give us a call and see how we can help you!
Q: WHAT COLORS AND TEXTURES ARE AVAILABLE? ARE THEY ALL THE SAME PRICE?
There are over 10,000 colors available offered by multiple manufacturers. Powder comes in a variety of textures such as smooth, rough textured, smooth hammered and even anti-skid. A wide variety of powder coating gloss finishes can be offered such as high gloss, semi-gloss, low gloss and matte and even clear. Not all powders are the same price. Price is based on availability, manufacturers, and ingredients. We carry stock colors that are naturally less expensive than special orders, custom matches, or hard to locate powders.
Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DRY?
Powder is applied dry with an electrical charge that assists in the adhesion to the parts. It is then cured in an oven. Once your item is cool from being in the oven, it is ready to ship or use as needed!
Q: DO YOU PICK UP OR DELIVER?
Yes, We can pick and deliver your parts. Just ask about pick up and delivery when you call!
