Powder Coat vs. LIquid PaintThe main difference between a conventional liquid paint and powder coating is that powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid form. Powder coating is a completely dry finishing process where finely ground particles of pigment and resin are powder coated with an electrostatic spray process; the part passes through an oven and cures, melting into a smooth film on the surface of the item, leaving powder coated products attractive, tough, durable, and resistant to scratches, cracks, UV rays, and rust.

THE PROCESS: POWDER COATING INVOLVES 3 BASIC STEPSThere are many ways to prepare the metal surface for powder coating. The removal of oil, soil, lubrication greases, metal oxides, welding scales etc. is essential prior to beginning the powder coating process. It can be done by a variety of chemical and mechanical methods. The selection of the method depends on the size and the material of the part to be powder coated, the type of soil to be removed and the performance requirement of the finished product.

STEP 1: POWDER APPLICATION
The Powder Coating process uses a solvent free dry mix of plastic resins, pigments, and fillers. It is electro statically charged with a powder coating gun and with low air velocity the particles are propelled toward the metal surface where it adheres to the metal surface by electric attraction. The most common way of applying the powder coating to metal objects is to spray the powder using an electrostatic gun, or corona gun. It is also common to heat the metal first and then spray the powder onto the hot substrate. Preheating can help to achieve a more uniform finish.
STEP 2: OVEN CURE
The object is then heated, and the powder melts into a uniform film, and is then cooled to form a hard coating. The powder coat creates a plastic sheet around the metal. The end result is a durable long lasting finish.
STEP 3: CARING FOR POWDER COATED SURFACES
During installations, the powder coating should be protected from damage due to abrasion or certain chemical contact. Once installed, maintaining the initial appearance of powder coating is simple. Since powder coated surfaces are non-porous, dirt and grime doesn't tend to stick very well. When they do get dirty, powder coatings should be washed down with soapy water -- use a neutral detergent, such as one for automotive finishes, and rinsed off with clean water.
